Phase 2 Update
Following the announcement in November 2018 about the delays Gigaclear were facing in delivery of their Lot 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 contracts, CDS and the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency have been unable to agree an acceptable recovery plan with them. CDS therefore has decided to end all five contracts with Gigaclear. Gigaclear will now focus its efforts on constructing a commercial network in Devon and Somerset. A full statement around this decision can be found here.
CDS intends to launch a fresh procurement on the open market this autumn commencing a tender process to identify new provider(s) of these services.
Whilst this procurement process takes place, Airband continue to make good progress delivering their Lot 4 contract, providing superfast broadband to 21,000 businesses and residents.
Alongside this, CDS are:
- Expanding our Community Challenge Fund, following successful pilots in Devon and Somerset
- Advancing a new collaboration with BT to extend coverage in rural areas
- Offering broadband vouchers to our residents and businesses under the national BDUK Better Broadband and Rural Gigabit schemes.
Below is a map of the Lots for reference.
The National Parks roll out is already underway, with broadband supplier Airband Community Internet Ltd installing its transmission point infrastructure to connect the most rural regions via a fixed wireless network.
We have produced a list of frequently asked questions regarding both our Phase 1 and Phase 2 programmes, and how the two align going forward. This includes questions relating to coverage and mapping. Please see FAQs for more details.
The 6 Lots and National Park Areas
After being awarded State Aid approval from the EU in May, the agreed Phase Two intervention area has been divided up into six lots, to enable a more competitive tender process. The 6 lot areas are shown in the below map. The hashed areas represent the two regions covered by the separate national park contract with Airband Community Internet Ltd.
