IT Specialist @ Holsworthy, Devon
I run a small specialist IT support limited company from home and the homes of colleagues. I live in remote North Devon in a rural area and have 4 employees. The internet is essential to my business and it could not be run without exchange of data over the internet with customers.
Whilst the speed and reliability of the internet here is adequate, reaching sometimes 6Mbps, using superfast broadband would greatly improve communications and ability to keep customers satisfied.
Once most businesses in cities are using superfast broadband it is going to be difficult for rural based businesses to compete if we are stuck using copper wire.
We have been trying to use Skype for video conferencing but often the slow speed makes it unacceptable to use. While it seemed a sensible idea to move the business from the Thames Valley 6 years ago to the rural South West, the coming of superfast broadband in cities has made the decision look less sensible.
While the internet made it easy to relocate some businesses like mine to rural areas, the arrival of superfast broadband in cities only will cause these businesses to move back UNLESS rural areas can quickly catch up with the fibre revolution.
